3 Understanding Stress Adopting the right attitude can convert a negative stress into a positive one.  

4 Simple Understanding Any stimuli, which does not fulfill your preconceived dream or desire, gives stress. When body is functioning beyond its capacity. Sometimes stress could be a motivating factor if converted to a positive energy.

5 Stages of Stress Four Stages have been defined by Salve in 1956.
Alarm Stage. Resistance Stage Exhaustion Stage Person Becomes a Patient.

6 Stress - Alarm Stage Rise in respiratory & heart rate.
Rise in adrenalin. Disorders in digestive system. Disturbances in behaviour, concentration & thought pattern. Frequent episodes of anxiety, fatigue, pain, cold and cough.

7 Stress: Resistance Stage
Similar symptoms as in first stage but more frequent & intense. Body stores starts depleting. Lack of energy for anabolic functions. Lack of oxygen for proper cellular functions. Symptoms starts turning into disorders & diseases.

8 Stress: Exhaustion Stage
Onset of diseases of different systems like acidity, indigestion, ulcers, cold, cough, insomnia, headache, migraine, skin problems (Long list of unhealthy symptoms). Frequent visits to doctors. More medical bills.

Its Origin dates back to 4500 BC. So it is about 6500 Years old. It has been used by Indians, Egyptians, Chinese, Greeks, Romans, Arabians, French People, English People and Americans. Traditionally used in the form of Ubtans, essence sticks etc. Now the understanding of essential oils have promoted their use for therapeutic usages.

13 The definition Aromatherapy is a form of alternative medicine that uses volatile plant materials, known as essential oils, and other aromatic compounds for the purpose of altering a person's mind, mood, cognitive function or health.

29 Therapeutic Action of Essential oils
Chemicals inherently present in them are easily assimilated in the human body. Essential oils are also oily substances which can easily penetrate the cell membrane which is also lipid in nature. Oxygenate cells & improves delivery of nutrients. Activate glands to release of stress hormones. Prevent toxic buildup in muscles & prevent fatigue. Triggers emotional reactions. Astonishingly high Antioxidant capacity. Does not leave any residual effect on any the body system for long.

Essential oils drawn from rhythmic system of the plant like leaves helps in managing distresses of respiratory system Eucalyptus, bay, cypress, sandalwood etc. are good for cold cough, sore throat etc. Inhalation of neat oil (s) and rubbing with neat oil mixed with carrier can be used to handle such conditions. Oils works as antiseptic, mucolytic & anti-inflammatory, anti viral as antifungal agents.

Essential oils drawn mainly from roots as well as from other parts of the plant deals with emotional & behavioural problems, nervous disorders & sleep problems etc. Some of them can also help in modifying attitudes & attain spiritual heights. Essential works as Uplifting, Relaxing, Sedative, antispasmodic and anti-inflammatory agents. Some of the relaxing oils are geranium, lavender, neroli, patcholi, rose, sandalwood, frankincense, chamomiles etc Some of the uplifting oils are basil, bergamot, rosemary, orange, cypress, peppermint, corriander, lemon, ylang ylang. Sedative oils are lavender, neroli, mandarin, velerian etc Oils can be used by inhalation via steam or vaporizing or spray in the room or can be used in massage and bath etc.

Essential oils drawn from leaves , flowers, seeds etc helps in managing digestive disorders like acidity, flatulence (gas), constipation etc Essential oils work as carminative, antispasmodic, anti-inflammatory, antifungal, antibacterial & diuretic agents. Oils from aniseed, fennel, ginger, peppermint, coriander, black pepper, lemon, Roman chamomile, lavender , rose etc. are highly effective in treating digestive problems. Since pure oils can not be ingested thus they need to be mixed with vegetable oil or lotion. The aromatic preparation can be rubbed on the abdominal area for quick relief.

Essential oils being volatile in nature and low in molecular weight quickly mingles with air and travels in the body fluids (blood & lymph) easily Cold, cough, weakness, flu, fever and many infectious diseases are the result of weak immune system. The immunity of the body can be strengthened by these oils. Tea tree, pine, eucalyptus, thyme are some of the potent oil to give the desired results. The oils work as be anti inflammatory , anti viral, anti microbial, anti fungal, uplifting, sedative, & relaxing, air purifier , immunostimulant agents. Inhalation, bath, vaporization, fumigation, massage are good ways to use essential oils for handling these diseases.

Most of the essential oils are effective in reducing aches & pains in different sites of the body. Even back pain joint pains, arthritis, spondylitis have been observed to find relief with application of these oils. Sports injuries are successfully handled including building of stamina, muscular strength & vitality Relaxing, sedative, antispasmodic and anti-inflammatory oils are very effective particularly which contain borneol or bornyl acetate like sage, rosemary Lavender, neroli, marjoram, rose, sandalwood, frankincense, chamomiles, rosemary, cypress, peppermint, cedarwood. Origanum, nutmeg, ginger, clove, black pepper , cajuput, eucalyptus thyme are good pain relievers. Selection of the oil , its dose is an important factor and can be decided on the basis of the type of the pain, its intensity and its chronic nature. Just inhalation may not provide relief but steam bath and massage or rub on the target site are effective treatment

35 Effect On Skin Aromatherapy is popular and acceptable in the cosmetic world as applied on externally Skin is beautified, texturized, detoxified. Skin is the first barrier for the pathogens Skin is very sensitive particularly of face thus lower dose is used. Effect of stress is easily reflected on the skin Rose, geranium, neroli, ylang ylang, German chamomile, cedarwood, pettitgrain, frankinscence, lavender, myrtle are skin friendly Some the oils are very effective in acne, scars & eczema.

Many oils are hormone balancers. Eg. rose, geranium, clary sage, cypress, fennel These oils are very effective in dysmenorea, ammonerea, PMS, menopause etc. During stress even blood pressure fluctuate . Marjoram, ylang ylang are good for reducing BP while rosemary & eucalyptus should be avoided.
