Endangered and Threatened Species
Chapter 10 Spring 2007
2
What is the importance of biodiversity?
Video – pretty antibiotics Protecting biodiversity
3
A single pond in Brazil can sustain a greater variety of fish than is found in all of Europe's rivers. A 25-acre plot of rainforest in Borneo may contain more than 700 species of trees - a number equal to the total tree diversity of North America. A single rainforest reserve in Peru is home to more species of birds than are found in the entire United States. One single tree in Peru was found to harbor forty-three different species of ants - a total that approximates the entire number of ant species in the British Isles. The number of species of fish in the Amazon exceeds the number found in the entire Atlantic Ocean.
5
WHAT IS BIODIVERSITY? Write your answer and explanation in the back of your notebook. Put the date and question on your paper.
6
Biodiversity Bio – Life Diversity - Different
How many species have been identified? So far ONLY 1.75 million have been identified Scientists estimate that 99.9% of all species that ever lived on earth are now extinct…. What does that mean for the species that are currently thriving?
7
WHAT IS BIODIVERSITY? – watch video and answer the questions as you watch.
8
Scientists study BIODIVERSITY
Genetic Species Ecosystem
9
Genetic Biodiversity Genetic variation within a species
10
Genetic Variation
11
Species Variation – variation of species
12
Ecosystem Variation - Biomes
13
Biodiversity is…. The foundation for ecosystems stability…
All organisms have a niche that keeps the world in balance.. (predator – prey, consumer, producer, scavanger…etc.) Symbiosis is a close relationship Parasitism Mutualism Commensalism
14
Para – sit - ism Parasite feeds on the host.
Parasite benefits, host is harmed.
15
Both organisms benefit from the relationship.
Mu – tu – al - ism Both organisms benefit from the relationship.
16
One benefits the other is unaffected.
Com – men – sal -ism One benefits the other is unaffected.
17
BIODIVERSITY Number and variety of different species in an ecosystem.
Important for the STABILITY of communities and ecosystems. Species Diversity Ecosystem Diversity Genetic Diversity
18
Species Diversity All the difference between populations of species AND different populations of species
19
Ecosystem Diversity Variety of habitats , communities and ecological processes. Without ecosystem diversity is it possible to have biodiversity?
20
Genetic Diversity Diversity within members of a populations genetic traits Necessary for adaptation and survival – WHY? Necessary for preventing a bottleneck – What is a bottleneck?

22
Endangered Species When a species population is so low that it will probably become extinct if not protected. Endangered Species Act (ESA) – Legislation put into effect to protect certain species – but many species have become extinct waiting to be added to the list.
23
Threatened Species Species that’s populations has declined so low that if not protected will become endangered. All species face some kinds of threats…name a few
24
WHAT Threatens Species Existence?
I do YOU do We do HUMANS ……. (If that is what you are) HOW ?
29
Exotic / Invasive Species
Exotic species that are introduced into an ecosystem they do not belong. Non – native species often have no natural predators and take over the whole ecosystem and food web. Simple – Free loaders, move in, eat all your food, make themselves at home and don’t leave you be.
30
Invasive Species Wrecking Havoc
Purple Loosestrife Zebra Mussel Gypsy Moth Snakehead Fish
31
More Endangered / Threatened Species
