Turn the sentences below into indirect speech: 1. Where did you say you saw Cathy yesterday, Linda? Mark says, 2. Have you said you did not know anyone called Beth when you were at high school, Susan? Mark asks Linda where she said she saw Cathy the day before. Mark asks Susan if she has said she did not know anyone called Beth when she was at high school.

3. Where is Paul? Mark asks where Paul is. 4. I have just seen somebody strange near my car. I called the police and guess what – the guy is a policeman. Mark says he has just seen somebody strange near his car. He adds that he called the police and for his surprise, the guy is a policeman.

When the first verb is in the past: We change all the verb tenses and make the same changes when the first verb is in the present or future. Lets see!

Lets do some exercises together: 1. Sandra said to Tom, Your mother will love these flowers. Sandra told Tom (that) his mother would love those flowers. 2. Mr. and Mrs. Jones said, Maybe our grandchildren will travel to Europe on vacation. Mr. and Mrs. Jones said (that) maybe their grandchildren would travel to Europe on vacation.

Pay attention to this – questions: Mary said to her father, Is grandma going to stay with us? Mary asked her father if grandma was going to stay with them. Mark asked, Does David study with you, Pete? Mark asked Pete if David studied with him.

Gus said, We have to save money for our trip next year. Gus said (that) they had to save money for their trip the following year. Attention: Use the following week, month, year, etc. or the next week, month, year, etc. when next week, month, year, etc. was used in the original statement.

Exercises: 1.I dont know how to get to your house. Pete said to Cathy, Pete told Cathy (that) he didnt know how to get to her house. 2.Will you come here tomorrow? Pete asked Cathy if she would come there the next day (or, the following day).

3. Is Carol going with us? Pete asked Cathy if Carol was going with them. 4. Does David study with you? Pete asked Cathy if David studied with her. 5. Our teacher will probably travel to Japan. Pete told Cathy (that) their teacher would probably travel to Japan.

6. Our cousin is going to take us to the movies. Peter told Cathy (that) their cousin was going to take them to the movies. 7. I will talk to Lucy tomorrow. Peter told Cathy (that) he would talk to Lucy the next day (or the following day).

8. We will go to the supermarket next week. Pete told Cathy (that) they would go to the supermarket the following week. 9. My brother is going to arrive in Miami next month. Pete told Cathy (that) his brother was going to arrive in Miami the following month. Thats all, folks!
