What abstract painting can look like How to make something Abstract The kinds of technology people use Image:

4 Let’s begin by exploring what abstract painting can look like…
Image;

5 Abstract Painting Abstract artists felt that they did not have to paint things realistically. In their paintings they would often paint people, animals and places using different shapes and colours. Abstract artists would paint different shapes and colours to help show the world in a different way.

6 Abstract Painting An abstract painting can disguise what the artist has painted. Let’s see what this artist has painted… The lines used in this painting reflect the shape of the branches and the tree trunk. However sometimes there are clues that can help us understand what the painting is about. And the colours in this painting reflect the leaves on the tree Let’s look for clues in this painting. What different colours can you see? Let’s look at another abstract painting… What different shapes and lines has the artists painted? Do we think of something natural when we look at the colours and shapes in this painting?

7 Abstract Painting In this painting I see shapes that look like cups and others that are shaped like a bottle and glass Using what we have learnt so far, lets see what this painting could be about… Let’s start by looking at the kinds of shapes in this painting? Can you see them? We can see how colour and shape can show familiar things in a very different way Are there any shapes that look like things we know? Or remind us of anything in particular? Let’s look at another abstract painting… I see 4 shapes that look like familiar things Image:

8 Abstract Painting What things have made this painting look like a television Abstract painting can also use shape, colour and size to look very similar to something The black frame, the bright green screen, the large size and being attached to the wall have helped make this painting look like an actual television What do we see in this image? We see what looks like a television on a wall This is actually a painting made to look like a real television Let’s look at more abstract paintings that use shape, colour and size Here is an image of an actual television on a wall

9 Abstract Painting What things have made this painting look like a fire alarm switch? Let’s start by looking at the colour. What colour has the artist used in this painting? What size do you think this painting is? Does this painting look big or small? The red colour, small size and being attached to the wall has helped make this painting look like a fire alarm switch Could this painting be copying an object that is small? Let’s look at one more abstract painting that uses shape, colour and size What things can we think of that look like this painting? Let’s see what object this painting has copied…

10 Abstract Painting What things have made this painting look like a fire hose cupboard? Let’s start by looking at the size of this painting. Does this painting look big or small? How high is this painting hung on the wall? What colour has the artist used? The red colour, large size and being attached to the wall has helped make this painting look like a fire hose cupboard What things can we think of that look like this painting? Do you have some ideas of what this painting looks like? Let’s see what object this painting has copied…

11 Matt Henry activity The artist behind these three artworks is NZ artist Matt Henry. As we saw, each painting focused on colour, shape and size. Using this style of painting create colour drawings of objects from home or in the classroom. These drawings have to be the same size as the objects you are drawing, so using measuring tools are important. Image:

12 Now that we know what abstract painting
can look like… Let’s recap on what we have learnt so far…

13 So what have we learnt so far?
Abstract painters decided to use colour and shape to show the world in a different way, Some abstract artists were so interested in shapes and colour that they would eventually disguise what they had painted, artists like Matt Henry used shape, colour and size to help make their paintings look like the objects they painted,

14 In the next lesson we will explore “how to make something abstract”
End of lesson End of lesson.
