3. Background
The years before the outbreak of the revolution in 1789 the French economy is facing difficulties from all areas.
We must remember that the French economy was largely based on agriculture and had NOT been transformed like GB during the industrial revolution in the same manner.
Good harvests had resulted in food surpluses – which contributed to an increase in the population.

4. The harvests go wrong!
There were disastrous harvests , , and 1788 and this changes everything. THINK – what effect does this have on the different sections of France?
The worst was in 1788 – freakish hailstones and huge rainstorms during the spring produces a very poor harvest. THINK – what effect will this have on the peasants and urban workers?
Bad harvests = massive unemployment = price rise in food = less demand for manufactured goods

5. Results of this harvest?
In normal times ½ the wages of a laborers wages would go on bread in it was increased to 88%. THINK – what does this do to the 3rd estate?
Textile industry fell by 50% - this was an industry largely carried out by agricultural women.

6. The result:
Landowners and large tithe owners were rumored and accused of hoarding grain. THINK – what would peasants and urban workers do?
There were huge grain and food riots. The worst in spring 1789 when the new harvest wasn’t in and the prices at their highest.
The nobility was becoming increasingly targeted for blame – what were they doing?
The Church was supposed to provide poor relief in times of crisis – they didn’t.
This led to a POLITICISATION of the 3rd estate and Louis’s handling of the situation exacerbated the situation.
