1 Cognition of spatial separation in the interior
Comparative experiments using computer graphics and full-scale model Naoyuki Oi (Faculty of Design, Kyushu Univ.)

2 Introduction Four spatial concepts for connected space
1) Inui et al.: concept of SPACIOUSNESS for rooms with a window 2) Subjective UNIT of space 3) CONTINUITY of two spaces 4) SPATIAL SEPARATION

3 Spaciousness, Unit Continuity and Separation

4 Simulation techniques
Full-scale models Computer graphics (Still images) Easy to prepare many settings but depth perception etc. could be different The same settings as full-scale models are used for the comparative study

5 Simulation techniques

6 Simulated space

7 Objectives Explore separation concept in the room
Compare full-scale models and CGs

8 Three experiments Experiment 1: Computer Graphics. Each subject estimates the projected images on the screen from the specified seating position. Experiment 2: Full-scale Models. Each subject estimates the real space of full-scale models from the specified seating position. Experiment 3: Full-scale Models. Each subject estimates the real space of full-scale models while walking along the instructed route in the space.

9 Methods Magnitude Estimation method for spatial separation
Seven rank grading for the impression on “easy (or hard) to go through” “easy (or hard) to find the situation of the other side” “two spaces look similar (or not)” Subjects: 20 students (10 female, 10 male)

10 Results The similar tendency among subjects is found, that is spatial separation is a common feeling. Short walls from both sides create less separation than the other type of walls. Experiment 3 shows similar results, except the impression of the easiness of movement for 1110mm low partition.

11 Results Height of partition wall and separation

12 Results Wall type and separation

13 Conclusion The spatial separation concept has large possibility in the room design Still images of Computer Graphics for the cognition of spatial separation is valid so far The further work should be needed, as the eye point for CG experiment has some influence

14 Acknowledgment This study was supported in part by Grant-in-Aid for the 21st Century COE Program
