Shape vs. form Shape refers to a two dimensional area clearly set off by one or more of the other visual elements, such as color, value, line, texture, and space. Shapes are flat They are limited to two dimensions: length and width

Shape vs. form Form is an object with three dimensions.
Two important features of form are mass and volume. Mass is a 3-D solid with solid, identifiable boundaries. Volume is used during discussions of interior space. Architecture: The space within a building Sculpture: The space in which the object occupies

What are Decorative Letters?
Letters represent something Name, place, thing, etc. Many people decorate a Letter to represent a person and their personal style

Where did they come from?
Using Initials (BS instead of my full name) did not occur until the late Antique period in Italy They were used as Decorative Scripts in the margins of books They did not become their own art form until the later developments in Anglo-Saxon Art

How are they Different? They vary based on individual styles
Depending on the use, they may be big or small, stand on their own, sit in a frame, etc.

Assignment Prep Work Consider which letter you would like to create Is this letter the first letter of your name? someone else’s name? Come up with ten different ways to write the letter Create 4 sketches –1 for each side of the letter (front, back, left side, right side) Create a design to go with it Think about stability Add color choices

Assignment Project- Create your own 3-D Letter
Must be at least 12 inches high Must be at least 3 inches thick Must be able to stand on it’s own
