Empire spanned 50 million people
Official language was Latin
Women considered citizens but could not vote
Incredibly strong military

4. The Fall of Rome Though powerful, the empire did not last
Changing emperors constantly made conflict
People paid high taxes
Unemployment was high and may were poor
The empire became too big to defend

Pioneered the use of domes, arches, and concrete

All Roman roads were paved
Created aqueducts (channels carrying water)

Many words we use today derive from Latin
