3 WINE, STRONG DRINK & DRUGS
Preliminary considerations

4 QUOTES Demosthenes said, "A definition is the beginning of knowledge."
Socrates said, "If you would converse with me, define your terms."

5 WINE "Natural WINE, is such as it comes from the grape, without any mixture or sophistication.“ "Adulterated WINE, is that wherein some drug is added to give it strength, fineness, flavour, briskness, or some other qualification." (The New Universal English Dictionary of Words, and of Arts and Sciences, 1730) Natural wine would be unfermented and, thus, non-intoxicating grape juice. Adulterated wine is that which is no longer as it was when it was squeezed from the grape. It has had something added to it. Thus, we must learn the meaning intended by the context in which a particular author uses the word.

6 STRONG DRINK Strong drink is from shekar, which was most likely a palm wine. It is extremely doubtful that the ancient Israelites knew about distillation. Thus, distilled beverages such as whiskey, brandy, gin, rum and vodka would have been unknown to them. The strongest drinks available to Israel contained only from % alcohol.

7 YAYIN, OINOS & SHEKAR GARMENTS = CLOTHES WINE = BLOOD OF GRAPES
Binding his donkey to the vine, And his donkey's colt to the choice vine, He washed his garments in wine, And his clothes in the blood of grapes. (Gen. 49:11) GARMENTS = CLOTHES WINE = BLOOD OF GRAPES This is a doublet where a statement is repeated with slightly different wording.

8 YAYIN, OINOS & SHEKAR Then the Lord spoke to Aaron, saying: "Do not drink wine or intoxicating drink, you, nor your sons with you, when you go into the tabernacle of meeting, lest you die. It shall be a statute forever throughout your generations, that you may distinguish between holy and unholy, and between unclean and clean, and that you may teach the children of Israel all the statutes which the Lord has spoken to them by the hand of Moses." (Lev. 10:8-11) We see that the priests were not to drink wine (yayin) or intoxicating drink (shekar).

9 YAYIN, OINOS & SHEKAR And the Lord spoke to Aaron: "Here, I Myself have also given you charge of My heave offerings, all the holy gifts of the children of Israel; I have given them as a portion to you and your sons, as an ordinance forever. This shall be yours of the most holy things reserved from the fire: every offering of theirs, every grain offering and every sin offering and every trespass offering which they render to Me, shall be most holy for you and your sons. But in Num. 18:8-12, we have this.

10 YAYIN, OINOS & SHEKAR In a most holy place you shall eat it; every male shall eat it. It shall be holy to you. This also is yours: the heave offering of their gift, with all the wave offerings of the children of Israel; I have given them to you, and your sons and daughters with you, as an ordinance forever. Everyone who is clean in your house may eat it.

11 YAYIN, OINOS & SHEKAR All the best of the oil, all the best of the new wine and the grain, their firstfruits which they offer to the Lord, I have given them to you. (Num. 18:8-12) New wine was freshly squeezed and was not forbidden, since it did not intoxicate.

12 YAYIN, OINOS & SHEKAR WINE = BLOOD OF GRAPES
Curds from the cattle, and milk of the flock, With fat of lambs; And rams of the breed of Bashan, and goats, With the choicest wheat; And you drank wine, the blood of the grapes. (Deut. 32:14) The “wine” here was unfermented. It had just been squeezed from the grapes. When the husks are still lying in the juice, they appear to be bleeding. WINE = BLOOD OF GRAPES

13 YAYIN, OINOS & SHEKAR WINE = GRAPE JUICE
Gladness is taken away, And joy from the plentiful field; In the vineyards there will be no singing, Nor will there be shouting; No treaders will tread out wine in the presses; I have made their shouting cease. (Isaiah 16:10) That which is trodden out in the presses will not intoxicate. Wine receives intoxicating properties through fermentation. Thus, the context determines whether the wine has intoxicating properties of not. WINE = GRAPE JUICE

14 DRUGS Where drugs are concerned we are only speaking of their recreational use. Many drugs are derived from plants. Not even that which has a legitimate use should be used illegitimately. Pain killers are sometimes needed but can become addictive. Addiction can lead to crime.

15 WINE, STRONG DRINK & DRUGS
Preliminary considerations Physical effects

16 Proverbs 20:1 Wine is a mocker, Strong drink is a brawler, And whoever is led astray by it is not wise. Wine, here, is said to be a mocker and is, therefore, fermented or intoxicating. “Strong drink” is a translation of shekar, which was probably a sort of palm wine, made from the juice or sap of the palm tree. The word sometimes means nothing more than sugar. Again, the context must be considered.

17 Proverbs 23:29-32 Who has woe? Who has sorrow? Who has contentions? Who has complaints? Who has wounds without cause? Who has redness of eyes? Those who linger long at the wine, Those who go in search of mixed wine. Do not look on the wine when it is red, When it sparkles in the cup, When it swirls around smoothly; At the last it bites like a serpent, And stings like a viper. Would this be unfermented or fermented wine? Surely, it is fermented. Unfermented wine does not bite like a serpent or sting like a viper. Nor does unfermented wine cause woe, sorrow, contentions, complaints or wounds without cause.

18 Proverbs 23:33-39 Your eyes will see strange things, And your heart will utter perverse things. Yes, you will be like one who lies down in the midst of the sea, Or like one who lies at the top of the mast, saying: "They have struck me, but I was not hurt; They have beaten me, but I did not feel it. When shall I awake, that I may seek another drink?" Clearly, Solomon is speaking of fermented wine. Unfermented wine does not cause one’s eyes to see strange things. Nor does it cause one’s heart to utter perverse things. Fermented wine, on the other hand, distorts vision, shortens reaction times, lowers inhibitions, dulls reflexes and clouds judgment.

19 Proverbs 31:4-5 It is not for kings, O Lemuel, It is not for kings to drink wine, Nor for princes intoxicating drink; Lest they drink and forget the law, And pervert the justice of all the afflicted. Again, fermented wine is under consideration. Unfermented wine does not cloud one’s judgment or cause forgetfulness.

21 1 Corinthians 6:9-10 Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God.

22 Galatians 5:19-21 Now the works of the flesh are evident, which are: adultery, fornication, uncleanness, lewdness, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, contentions, jealousies, outbursts of wrath, selfish ambitions, dissensions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, revelries, and the like; of which I tell you beforehand, just as I also told you in time past, that those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God.

23 WINE, STRONG DRINK & DRUGS
Preliminary considerations Physical effects Spiritual consequences Social drinking I am not referring to having a glass of wine with your meal. I am referring here to cocktail parties and the like - drinking as a social event.

24 1 Peter 4:3-4 For we have spent enough of our past lifetime in doing the will of the Gentiles--when we walked in lewdness, lusts, drunkenness, revelries, drinking parties, and abominable idolatries. In regard to these, they think it strange that you do not run with them in the same flood of dissipation, speaking evil of you.

25 QUOTE Dr. Melvin H. Knisely, head of the Department of Anatomy at the Medical College of South Carolina, told a news conference in Washington, D.C., that social drinking may result in a "great deal of damage" to the brain. "When his level of social drinking is such that he feels very happy, a man is beginning to kill a few brain cells."

26 WINE, STRONG DRINK & DRUGS
Preliminary considerations Physical effects Spiritual consequences Social drinking Self-control

27 Romans 6:8-10 Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him, knowing that Christ, having been raised from the dead, dies no more. Death no longer has dominion over Him. For the death that He died, He died to sin once for all; but the life that He lives, He lives to God.

28 Romans 6:11-12 Likewise you also, reckon yourselves to be dead indeed to sin, but alive to God in Christ Jesus our Lord. Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body, that you should obey it in its lusts. The best way to prevent drunkenness from reigning in your mortal body is to not drink, at all.

29 2 Peter 1:5-7 But also for this very reason, giving all diligence, add to your faith virtue, to virtue knowledge, to knowledge self-control, to self-control perseverance, to perseverance godliness, to godliness brotherly kindness, and to brotherly kindness love.

30 2 Peter 1:8-9 For if these things are yours and abound, you will be neither barren nor unfruitful in the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ. For he who lacks these things is shortsighted, even to blindness, and has forgotten that he was cleansed from his old sins.

31 2 Peter 1:10-11 Therefore, brethren, be even more diligent to make your call and election sure, for if you do these things you will never stumble; for so an entrance will be supplied to you abundantly into the everlasting kingdom of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

33 1 Timothy 5:23 No longer drink only water, but use a little wine for your stomach's sake and your frequent infirmities. There is no reason to think that Paul is recommending an intoxicating beverage in this passage. Timothy, apparently, was a teetotaler. At any rate, Paul tells him to “use a little wine” not “drink wine to your heart’s content.” This would authorize the medicinal use of Nyquil (10% alcohol) but not Jack Daniels, Jim Beam, Seagram’s Seven or anything else with 35-75% alcoholic content.
