11. Viruses Viruses and Bacteria
Viruses are not included in the domains of living things. They are not alive. A virus is a tiny, nonliving particle that enters and then reproduces inside a living cell. They don’t have many of the characteristics of living things.

12. Bacteria
If life were a movie, bacteria would be both villains and heroes. They are very small; millions can fit into the period at the end of this sentence. The smallest bacteria are about the size of the largest viruses. Most bacteria are one of three basic shapes: ball, rod, or spiral.

13. Bacterial Cell Structures
Bacteria are single-celled organisms. Each cell is a separate living organism. They do not have a nucleus, but they do have cell walls that protect them from attacks. The cell membrane controls what substances pass into and out of the cell. Some bacteria have structures attached to the cell wall that help them move around. Flagella whip around like propellers to move bacteria toward their food.
