1 BSAS Annual Conference, Belfast, 12-14th April, 2010
Effect of sodium selenite on male Sprague - Dawley rats exposed to sublethal dose of cadmium chloride F Jabeen, A S Chaudhry School of Agriculture Food and Rural Development, Newcastle University, UK

2 BSAS Annual Conference, Belfast, 12-14th April, 2010
Objective To assess the protective role of selenium against cadmium induced toxicity in rats

3 RESULTS Cadmium (Cd) = occupational and environmental toxin
Selenium (Se) = important antioxidant RESULTS Body weights were lower for Cd, higher for Se and comparable for Cd -Se groups with control The mean liver and kidney weights and Hb were significantly lower in the Cd than other groups Hb in Se group was significantly higher than other groups Cd was many fold higher in kidneys and livers for the Cd than the control group Cd was below the detection limit in Se but it was many folds higher for the Cd-Se than the control group and lower than the Cd group High levels of Se were detected in Cd than the Cd-Se group

4 Conclusion This study indicates that Selenium may have a protective effect against cadmium induced toxicity
