2. Research question
With a focus on songbird communities. Mention that this question is being addressed on two different scales (which are the thesis chapters) – umbrella and surrogacy…but that it’s essentially the same idea, just on differing scales. How does this apply?...well it’s all about efficiency (fewer dollars spent, potentially less land to be protected, etc.).
The question is not if grizzly bears are directly causing bird conservation (eg. Like by scaring away predators or something of that nature), but more whether the habitat they select (and is protected) is also selected by songbirds (as a whole, certain guilds, certain species, etc.)
Q1.3: How does grizzly bear conservation relate to broader questions of biodiversity maintenance within the ecosystem?

3. Map Slide – show study region for thesis Chapter One (Yellowhead region with individual site points) point out the range of points -mention that study will also look at all grizzly bear range on a larger scale, but these are the micro-sites that have been examined on the small scale.

4. ARU slides – mention the how very briefly, include ARU photo and screen shot of audio data. Mention ARUs were set to record for certain periods of time; sites had known bear activity (and individual bear ids, sex, etc.)…provided by FRI (used this season’s and previous season’s data). They were paired with other sites nearby (within 500m -3km) that were not known bear use sites…that way we can see if bear use sites have more bird conservation value than non-bear use sites. Don’t go too far into detail – will cover specifics at field day.
Mention that methods for larger scale study are still being determined – but will be a computer modelling approach
Animation to audio data – briefly explain the audio analysis process (looking for species & individuals if possible), three minute recordings centered around sunrise.

5. Conclusion slide: tie back to initial research question- results will indicate if (and on what scale) and how Grizzly Bears (and their habitat) could contribute to the conservation of songbirds (a large and diverse group of species). Efficiency!
