Church of England- official religion all citizens had to follow
Separatists/Pilgrims- did not want to follow CH. Of Eng. and separate
Mayflower (1620)- pilgrims sailed for NAm seeking religious freedom, landed in Plymouth
Mayflower Compact- Pilgrims set up a set of rules for all Pilgrims to follow

Great Migration- thousands flee to NAm
John Winthrop- 1st Governor
City on a Hill- goal to create a model society based on God’s laws that will be an example for the world to follow

-Liberal Land Policy- good land, access to rivers (transportation)
-Philadelphia- planned city to grow, largest city in colonies
-Expansion- more settlers from Europe moved in, worse relations w Na.Am.

When free have worst land and want protection from Nam, Gov. Berkely refuses and Nathaniel Bacon organizes Ind Ser who burn Jamestown to ground

Barbados Slave Code- stated slaves are property, have no rights
Middle Passage- voyage from Africa to America,
25-60% of slaves died
