1 Early American Colonies Objective-Students will understand…
1) Explain 1 reason each as to why colonists moved to one of the three Eastern Seaboard regions (New England, the Middle Colonies, and Southern Colonies.) 2) Analyze one beliefs and/or event in each one of the regions and explain how that belief/event has an impact on American society today.

3 Plymouth and the Pilgrims
Church of England- official religion all citizens had to follow Separatists/Pilgrims- did not want to follow CH. Of Eng. and separate Mayflower (1620)- pilgrims sailed for NAm seeking religious freedom, landed in Plymouth Mayflower Compact- Pilgrims set up a set of rules for all Pilgrims to follow Why is this document so significant?

4 Massachusetts Bay Colony
Puritans- persecuted by King because they refused to join Ch. Of Eng. Great Migration- thousands flee to NAm John Winthrop- 1st Governor City on a Hill- goal to create a model society based on God’s laws that will be an example for the world to follow *How is “City on a Hill” seen in the US beliefs today? Dissenters Anne Hutchinson- against Predestination (idea that people are already saved by God at birth) Roger Williams- believed in separation of Church and State/Gov. Founded Rhode Island (complete freedom of Religion)

6 Pennsylvania Quakers- protestant, pacifist, anti-slavery, pro-Na.AM (friendly) William Penn- given land by King to create a haven in New World for Quakers -Advertising- all over Europe -Liberal Land Policy- good land, access to rivers (transportation) -Philadelphia- planned city to grow, largest city in colonies -Expansion- more settlers from Europe moved in, worse relations w Na.Am. *How is Penn. different from New England?

8 Virginia- 1st colony founded
Tobacco- business focus in VA House of Burgesses- 1st representative assembly (1819) Bacon’s Rebellion mini civil war in Va. Indentured Servants- trade passage for 5 years labor When free have worst land and want protection from Nam, Gov. Berkely refuses and Nathaniel Bacon organizes Ind Ser who burn Jamestown to ground Result (creates a need for a less troublesome labor source? WHO? And why would they be less troublesome?)

9 Slavery Barbados Slave Code- stated slaves are property, have no rights Middle Passage- voyage from Africa to America, 25-60% of slaves died *Is such a harsh slave law necessary?
