The Debate About Baptism
6
The Great Debate Few “don’t believe” in baptism The debate: 1) What is baptism? 2) Which one is the right baptism? 3) Is it merely a symbol or something more? Very few people don’t believe in baptism. Most people say it is important, but just what it is and how it is important is what is contested.
7
1. What is Baptism? "He who believes and is baptized will be saved….” Mark 16:16 Catholics, Orthodox, Anglicans, Lutherans, Presbyterians, Congregationalists and other Reformed denominations, Methodists and some Nazarenes, and the Moravian Church also practice infant baptism. About 80% of Americans identify as Christian. and about 25% of Americans alone identify as Catholic. This means somewhere between 1/3 and ½ of people who were “baptized” may have been baptized (or believe) in this manner: sprinkled as a baby.
8
1. What is Baptism? “…Baptism: not the removal of the filth of the flesh, but the answer of a good conscience toward God…” 1 Peter 3:21 Baptism responds to belief Without belief it is not baptism
9
1. What is Baptism? “…And both Philip and the eunuch went down into the water, and he baptized him.…” Acts 8:38 Baptism = Immerse Pouring is not baptism Additional to the last statistic, both Catholics and many protestants practice “baptism” by pouring or sprinkling

Ac 19:3 And he said to them, "Into what then were you baptized?" So they said, "Into John's baptism." 4 Then Paul said, "John indeed baptized with a baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe on Him who would come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus.“
