Graphs showing type of devices used in each era demonstrate dramatic increase in the use of a long-term device (LTVAD) in the late era. The use of a temporary device (either extracorporeal membrane oxygenation or short-term VAD) as a bridge-to-transplantation has largely been abandoned in the late era. Patients with LTVAD are subdivided into those who were bridged from temporary devices to LTVAD and those who directly received LTVAD.
