1. brilliant warrior 2. created empire including France, Germany, Austria, Italy & Northern Spain 3. crowned by Pope Leo III “Emperor of the Romans” 4. built schools 5. brought scholars to Aachen (capital) to teach 6. brought people together under common bonds, ie Christianity. People could see themselves as Europeans, not just tribes
