A. 1915: Russia losing badly on E. Front, need supplies (gas masks)
1. Can’t supply Russ. from N. bc German U-Boats patrol northern seas
 Must supply Russia from the south, thru Dardanelles sea strait
2. Germans ask Ottomans to block the Dardanelles sea strait
3. British will send Australia & New Zealand (ANZAC) troops to invade Gallipoli peninsula & open sea strait

3. B. Under the command Colonel Mustafa Kemel, Ottoman Empire uses trench warfare
1. Gallipoli becomes a bloody stalemate, ANZAC withdraws
C. British encourage Arab Nationalists to revolt against the Ottomans
1. Why? Punish Ottomans & give British access to Middle East oil
II. Great War Expands to Other Parts of the World
A. Asia: Japan starts attacking German territory in China & Pacific
B. Africa: British & French African colonies attack German African colonies taking three of the four colonies
C. War is expanding, more propaganda is being used
1. Need support of your own citizens but especially colonial people
a. Many colonies are promised independence if they help
