Ambitious year ahead Maintenance of existing infrastructure
Projects on land Projects afloat Projects that sink ( What gets done is based on amount of help received from members, the RC can’t do it alone ) Spring 2008 Fredericton Yacht Club 8/31/2019

Today’s Mooring Situation
33 moorings afloat, ??? lost Chain (various sizes) with concrete blocks of various sizes All inspected in 07 Need more moorings in spring but mostly in fall Spring 2008 Fredericton Yacht Club 8/31/2019

Lessons learned from Inspection
Flat mooring blocks are better than any other shape. All top corners should be rounded. Anchor loop in concrete must be substantial in diameter to allow for abrasion wear. The chain at the very bottom MUST be protected against abrasion from the concrete. We found moorings with perfect looking 1/2" chain at the top and at the bottom it was corroded to about 1/4". This happened because the galvanizing was abraded off from rubbing on the top of concrete pad and the chain began to corrode galvanically. Spring 2008 Fredericton Yacht Club 8/31/2019

Lessons learned from Inspection
We should use the largest size hardware at the bottom that can be fitted. All 1/2" chain is heavy and tends to sink the balls partially. For the minimal cost, the shackles at the top should be replaced every season on all moorings. We found a lot of shackles that still had the paint on the pin handle, but the threads were gone completely. The divers found most of the plastic tie wraps at the bottom to be broken or missing. They highly recommend an aircraft grade tie wire instead of plastic ties. Plastic ties are fine at the top, where they can be inspected and replaced annually. A swivel at the bottom is recommended. Nylon mooring system Cost advantage $300 vs $445 ($76 vs $208) ½” chain breaking strength 18000lbs 1” nylon three strand lbs wet Both need chafe protection, regular inspection Nylon versus Chain for shock absorbing May hobby horse more on a nylon mooring Will require upgrading of pontoon boat. Won’t rust, still have steel shackle issues. Painters should be 1.5 to 2.5 times freeboard maximum! Spring 2008 Fredericton Yacht Club 8/31/2019

Recommendation Motion to approve the use of 1” 3 strand nylon moorings for club moorings. Spring 2008 Fredericton Yacht Club 8/31/2019
