2 SWBAT find the probability of mutually exclusive events.
Objective SWBAT find the probability of mutually exclusive events.

3 Mutually Exclusive – Two events that cannot happen at the same time.
Ex. If a number is chosen from a bag with numbers 1 – 10 you cannot choose a number that is both 5 and even. You can choose a number that is five or even. What is the probability of choosing a number that is five or even? # of possible outcomes = # of favorable outcomes

4

5 COOKIES A plate has 6 chocolate chip cookies, 4 peanut butter cookies, and 5 sugar cookies. What is the probability of randomly selecting a chocolate chip cookie or a sugar cookie? A B C D

6 Deck of Cards

7 P(black nine or heart) = P(black nine) + P(heart)
Probability of Mutually Exclusive Events CARDS You draw a card from a standard deck of playing cards. What is the probability that the card will be a black nine or any heart? The events are mutually exclusive because the card cannot be both a black nine and a heart at the same time. P(black nine or heart) = P(black nine) + P(heart)

8 CARDS You draw a card from a standard deck of playing cards
