1
Celebratory brochure on Natura 2000 and the Habitats Directive
2
Purpose and target audience
To tell the story of Natura 2000 and the Habitats Directive and what it sets out to achieve and its main provisions (in short sections and accompanied by interesting facts and figures) highlight its main achievements and successes and illustrate these with practical examples and tangible results (case studies) TARGET AUDIENCE: the interested public (ie those already interested in nature – not ‘Jo/Jane Public’)
3
Structure 40- 50 pages (A5 or A4) Attractive layout and design
Easy to read with succinct messages (no dense texts) Each message illustrated by practical examples Quotes and stories from various stakeholders to give a more personal feel and show that people have sense of ‘ownership of Natura 2000’ (not just a EU/Brussels ‘thing’ and not just a nature thing)
4
Focus Looks at all aspects of the Habitats Directive :
Site designation (biogeo approach, increased PA coverage in many countries, increased knowledge trhough inventories ) Not just protection (art 6.2) but also positive measures (Art 6.1) Inclusive approach to site management – role of stakeholders Coordinated and strategic approach to managing natural resource Integration into wider land use policies Better planning ,more sustainable development (Art )
5
Focus Looks at all aspects of the Habitats Directive (continued):
Greater financing for nature (LIFE, RDP mainstreaming approach) Species protection measures – removed certain key threats? Reporting – first pan_EU assessments Better access to information/ awareness for public/other sectors? Complementarity with other EU laws: WFD/MSFD/EIA.2020 BAP
6
Must be able to show that N2000 and EU law is ‘in touch with the real world’
Should not just list what has been done (this is no ‘end of term’ report) must be able to illustrate tangible results and successes to demonstrate that N2000 actually works But must not over-do it and give impression that every thing is ‘rosy in the garden of eden’ Should not focus too much on single site examples – look for more strategic examples where possible
7
Illustrations of successes
Examples to illustrate tangible successes of Habitats Directive and Natura 2000 (aim for case studies from all MS): Area under protection in country substantially higher than without N2000 Population of species increased thanks to (eg Spanish Imperial Eagle,..) Habitat type x now well managed (eg Estonian Coastal meadows) Key threats that have been removed/ tackled at source (eg large scale campaigns against electrocution or poisoning of rapters) Resolution of long standing conflicts between different land users (eg transport, wind farms, estuaries…) New areas under protection (eg marine) Socio-economic benefits derived from Natura 2000 (eg tourism, products) Better knowledge about conservation, status and management of species Climate change and ecosystem benefits of N2000
8
Please help: Need more examples of success stories or tangible results from your country/region Some ideas already received from Germany, Estonia and Spain but more examples needed Also if any scientific /technical publications that illustrate improved conservation of xyz which can be linked back to N2000 – please send ! Feedback on approach / ambition of the brochure
