Supplementary Figure 1 Directed acyclic graph illustrating dependency assumptions for the relation between family history of colorectal cancer and colorectal cancer screening. This directed acyclic graph illustrates the assumed structure of the relation between family history of colorectal cancer and colorectal cancer screening based on existing evidence. The boxes (nodes) depict factors related to colorectal cancer screening. The arrows describe the direction of the relation between the nodes. A complete graph thus aids in the identification of potential confounding paths using the back-door test (eg, through age, which affects both family history of colorectal cancer and colorectal cancer screening). The identification of confounding paths aids in model specification for the exposure-outcome relation of interest and helps avoid overadjustment and unnecessary adjustment.
