What causes melanoma? How high is the risk of melanoma in NZ? What kind of people have higher risk of melanoma? What can be done to reduce the risks of melanoma?

Ultra-Violet (UV) Radiation
UV radiation has high energy, enough to damage our skin cells (causing sunburns). Too much exposure to UV can cause Melanoma skin cancer. But it also helps our body make vitamin-D which is needed for healthy bones. Most of UV from the sun is blocked by the Ozone layer in the atmosphere.
