1
Do Now Why do atoms form chemical bonds, and what happens during the bonding process?
2
Ionic Bonding and Ionic Compounds
Chapter 6
3
Essential Question What are the three main types of bonds and how are they different?
4
Chemical Bonds Chemical bonds: the attraction that holds two elements together (involves valence electrons). Compound: two or more elements chemically bonded together.
5
3 Main Types of Bonds Ionic Bond Covalent Bond Metallic Bond
6
Ionic Bonds Ionic bond: formed between two (or more) elements by the transfer of electrons. Formed between a metal & nonmetal. Ion: a charged atom Cation = positive (+) charge Anion= negative (-) charge
7
Naming Ionic Compound The cation (positively charged ion) keeps its name The anion (negatively charged ion) changes the end of its name to ide
8
Ionic Compound All compounds have an overall charge of zero.
Cations give their electrons to anions in an ionic bond: CATIONS ARE ALWAYS LISTED FIRST Na+ ion + Cl- ion → SodiumChloride (NaCl) Mg+ ion + O- ion → MagnesiumOxide (MgO) Mg+ ion + Cl- ion → MagnesiumChloride (MgCl2)
9
Writing Ionic Formulas
Simple Rule: balance out the (+) and (-) ion charges so they equal to zero. Na1+ + Cl1- Mg2+ + O2- Mg2+ + Cl1-
10
Characteristics of Ionic Bonding
Ionic compounds are arranged in an orderly form known as a crystal lattice They are held together by the oppositely charged ions. In a solid state, the lattice arrangements, the ionic compound cannot conduct electricity. In a liquid or solution, the ions are released and are able to conduct electricity.
