1 Lipids What are Lipids? Only write the Q!
(Today I will help you with Cornell note taking…. Start to build your own skills!)

2 Q! What are the three types of lipids?
Lipids= both liquid and solid fats oils - lipids that are liquids at room temperature fats- lipids that are solids at room temperature waxes-natural lipids found in plants

3 Q! What Fats are good for you?
“Good Fats” a.k.a. Unsaturated Fats Vegetable oils Nuts Avocados Olives Eggs, fish and lean meat Milk products

4 Q! What types of fats are Bad For you?
“Bad Fats” a.k.a. Saturated and Trans Fats Processed foods Baked goods Animal products (cream, lard, butter) Deep-fried foods

5 Q! What are the “Building Blocks” or
Structure of Lipids? They are made of 2 parts = Glycerol and fatty acids fatty acid glycerol fatty acid fatty acid

6 2 parts = Glycerol and fatty acids
1. Structure of Lipids 2 parts = Glycerol and fatty acids fatty acid glycerol fatty acid fatty acid

7 Lipids have 2 main functions
Functions of Lipids Lipids have 2 main functions

8 Q! What are the functions of of Lipids?
1. Component of Cell Membranes Form a lipid bi-layer (2 layers)

9 Continued…Q! What are the functions of of Lipids?
2. Stored energy supply Stores twice as much energy (calories) as carbohydrates Provide insulation from the cold and protect organs

10 Question: How do bears hibernate all winter without eating?

11 Lipid Recap 1. Why are lipids organic molecules?
2. Building blocks = Glycerol and fatty acids 3. Functions = 1. Make up cell membranes 2. Stored Energy Supply When you finish make sure to study carbohydrates/proteins and lipids for your exit quiz!

12 Please put the following in the correct category for what type of macromolecule it is mostly made of: Bread Butter Vegetable oil Shrimp Steak Rice Chicken Plant cell wall Bagel Plant cell membrane Oatmeal Peanuts

13 1. What are the building blocks of lipids?
Lipid Exit Quiz 1. What are the building blocks of lipids? 2. Which statement describes the major role of lipids within a cell? They cause DNA to replicate. They move RNA in the cytoplasm. They catalyze chemical reactions in the cell cytoplasm. They are the main structural components of membranes. Do lipids supply immediate energy or store energy? Draw and Label the LIPID, PROTEIN, and AMINO ACID MOLECULES BELOW:

14 Objective: Students will describe the characteristics of lipids by classifying food samples as high or low in lipid content. By the end of class, you will be able to describe the building blocks and functions of lipids.

15 Testing for Lipids Today we will use the “brown paper bag test” to determine if lipids are present in foods we eat. Directions: With a partner, take a clean piece of a brown paper bag. Dab a small amount of water and oil on two separate spots using the Q-tips. Label the spots where you test them.

16 Testing for Lipids Directions (continued):
To test your other objects, gently rub them on the bag. Label the spot where you rubbed them. Observe and record your results after waiting at least 5 minutes. If lipids are present, then a dark stain will remain on the bag- this indicates a lipid!

17 Testing for Lipids Data Table: Set up your data table like the one below. Item Prediction? Observations Water Oil Peanut Cucumber Fritos Apple Pine nut

18 Testing for Lipids Analysis Questions:
Which foods showed the presence of lipids? What did you use for your control (comparison) in this test?
