7 The Office’s History 1968 – Began as the Coordinating Committee on Library Services to the Disadvantaged 1970 – Established as the Office for Services to the Disadvantaged 1973 – Jean Coleman appointed as staff liaison 1979 – Created the Literacy Training Project, one of its first initiatives 1980 – Name changed to the Office of Library Outreach Services 1995 – Name changed to Office of Literacy and Outreach Services American Library Association Annual Conference Jean E.
