1 Intrauterine microdialysis reveals cycle-dependent regulation of endometrial insulin-like growth factor binding protein-1 secretion by human chorionic gonadotropin  Peter Licht, M.D., Vassili Russu, M.D., Silke Lehmeyer, Johannes Möll, Ernst Siebzehnrübl, M.D., Ludwig Wildt, M.D.  Fertility and Sterility  Volume 78, Issue 2, Pages (August 2002) DOI: /S (02)

2 FIGURE 1 Selective expression of IGFBP-1 in the uterine fluid of the late luteal phase. All women examined before day 10 after the beginning of the LH peak were IGFBP-1 negative. On day 10, all women except one had IFGBP-1 levels of >2 ng/mL. On day 11 and day 12 after the beginning of the LH peak, all women investigated were IGFBP-1 positive. This cycle dependency was statistically significant (P<.0001). Licht. hCG and IGFBP-1. Fertil Steril 2002. Fertility and Sterility  , DOI: ( /S (02) )

3 FIGURE 2 Dynamics of hCG’s effect on intrauterine IGFBP-1 levels in a typical woman. Intrauterine microdialysis was performed 12 days after the beginning of the LH peak. The uterine effluent was collected in fractions of 1 hour each. After 2 hours, hCG infusion (500 IU/h) was started for 5 hours. Immediately after the start of infusion, intrauterine IGFBP-1 levels started to decline. Similar results were obtained in the majority of 45 women treated with hCG. Mean levels of intrauterine IGFBP-1 during hCG infusion were significantly lower as compared with those before the start of infusion (P<.01). Licht. hCG and IGFBP-1. Fertil Steril 2002. Fertility and Sterility  , DOI: ( /S (02) )

4 FIGURE 3 Selective inhibition of intrauterine IGFBP-1 levels by hCG in the late luteal phase of the menstrual cycle. Means ± SEM are depicted for all women investigated in the midluteal phase between day 5 and day 9 (A) or during the late luteal phase at or after day 10 (B) after the beginning of the LH peak. Although there was no significant effect of hCG on IGFBP-1 levels in the first group, hCG provoked a significant decrease in intrauterine IGFBP-1 levels as compared with the case of untreated controls in the late luteal phase (P=.023).
