What is phonics? Phonics is a way of teaching children to read which involves learning the sounds that letters make words. (It is not the same as letter names) c-a-t Children learn sets of sounds and then practice blending them together to read words. They also learn to segment them in order to write words.

Phonics Terminology Phoneme – speech sounds
Grapheme – letters that makes the phoneme (sound) (igh, i-e, ie) Blending – Merging the phonemes c-a-t into the word cat READING Segmenting – Taking a spoken word (e.g. him) Identifying the individual sounds h-i-m WRITING Pure sound – the smallest possible sound. ( ‘t’ not ‘tuh’)

How we teach phonics They also do the opposite: segmenting words into sounds to write words: p-i-n (three sounds) ch-ai-n (three sounds) d-ay-d-r-ea-m (six sounds)

Phonics Screening Check
The phonics screening check has been introduced by the Department of Education to check the phonics knowledge of children across the country. The check takes place during the month of June.

Preparing Children for the Phonics Screening Check
Our pupils are used to reading to adults and having an adult check their understanding. We do our best to make sure the test is not stressful for the children. We do lots of preparation in class for the test, in the form of our usual phonics work.
