1 8.2 Liberals, conservatives, and radicals

2 What do you think the words liberal, conservative, and radical mean?
Warm up What do you think the words liberal, conservative, and radical mean?

3 In the 19th century Liberals – “mostly middle class business leaders and merchants. They wanted to give more power to elected parliaments, but only the educated and the landowners could vote.” Conservatives – “usually wealthy property owners and nobility. They argued for protecting the traditional monarchies of Europe.” Radicals – “favored drastic change to extend democracy to all people. They believed that governments should practice the ideals of the French Revolution – liberty, equality, and brotherhood.”

4 Scenario You are a member of the parliament of Hogiestan. After a long history of only Mr. Hogie being in power, the parliament has decided they need to re-think who has a say in the country’s decisions. The question coming up for debate is : Who should have voting rights in the nation of Hogiestan? As a liberal, conservative, or radical member of parliament, you must write a letter to Mr. Hogie and his new second in command, Ms. Razvi, highlighting the following: - Define what your position as a liberal, conservative, or radical means - Who do you think should have voting rights in Hogiestan? And why? - Be sure to have proper spelling, grammar, and structure - Make sure it is 8, quality sentences in length

5 SAMple belief who Voting position consistentcy
From the point of view of a cat : Dear leaders of the country, As a member of the feline party, I am appalled that voting rights are limited to humans in Hogiestan. My position as a cat means that I will work to protect and further the rights of all the animals in the country. Humans and animals deserve to have the equal status because we contribute to society by sacrificing to make life better for you humans: we comfort you, are companions to you, entertain you, and even give up our lives so that you can eat. Therefore, regardless of the language barrier, it is only fair that the vote be extended to us as well. While we don’t have any wealth of our own, we make up part of the country’s wealth by our very existence – the pet market is huge, in case you haven’t noticed. Therefore, I would urge you to let animals have representatives in parliament, and that every man and animal should be able to vote. If our desires are not met, we are willing to go to extremes in order to have an equal society. Be prepared for a revolution, with the animals organizing and revolting against human government and our owners, if you can’t give us the vote. Sincerely, An Agitated LOLcat who Voting position consistentcy
