Lesson 12 – Another Primary Research Method
2
Plan FINISH! Planning of Investigation Introduction
Aims and Objectives Rationale Introduction to Secondary Research Secondary Research Write up Introduction to Primary Research Primary Research Conclusion Evaluation Bibliography & Appendices FINISH! This is where we are now.
3
REMEMBER: Types of Primary Research
Questionnaire Interview Focus groups Observations Prototype Experiments Letters/ s Testing You will need to choose 1 more method that is suitable for your project
4
What is an interview? Use the words below to write your definition of an interview: Series Questions Two Exchange Class to develop own definition using the key terms
5
When is it a good idea to use an interview?
When detailed information is required. When you require a lengthy explanation that may need some form of extension. When the issue being addressed is complex and may required a lengthy explanation.

Questionnaire or interview- Why?
Topic Questionnaire Interview Why? Favourite colour Best football team in UK Who will win the 6 nations? Why? What can be done to challenge obesity in teens? Think-pair-share discussion on which method would be best and why considering the limitations and advantages of each method

Questionnaire or interview- Why?
Topic Questionnaire Interview Why? Favourite colour A `how many` question that has short closed answers. Detail other than the colour not required to answer the research question. Best football team in UK A `how many` question that has short a answers. Detail other than the team not required to answer the research question. Who will win the 6 nations? Why? Who would win the 6 nations could be a questionnaire but why needs more detail and justification, the person carrying out the interview would want the opportunity to probe and help the answer develop. What can be done to challenge obesity in teens? A massive topic that has so many answers but a simple questionnaire could be too limiting in terms of response and an interview would allow for development of points.

Design considerations of interview
How many times will you make contact? Once? Twice? More? How will you record the data? Written? Audio? MP4? Where will it take place? Class discussion- why would you want more than one interview? What challenges would that face you with?
9
Types of interviews Structured Unstructured
Questions are pre determined and will be asked in a set order. They are closed questions. Structured interviews are easy to replicate and so this means it is easy to test for reliability. Structured interviews are fairly quick to conduct which means that many interviews can take place within a short amount of time. Can also be called `Discovery interviews`. Some open ended questions that can be asked in any order or missed out. These are more flexible and can be adapted as the interview develops. They have an increased validity as the interviewer is able to probe for clarification. Consider semi structured interviews- often best used when there will be only one opportunity to meet the person being interviewed. Has a predetermined set of questions that are a mixture of both open and closed. Structured: Questionnaire that contains only closed-ended questions Semi-structured: Contains both open-ended and closed ended questions Unstructured: Contains open-ended questions exclusively or majority
10
Create and Conduct another method
You will need to design and conduct another method of primary research e.g. Interview What do you want to find out? Look at your aims / objectives, what can you ask to help achieve them? Design in word Next lesson will be to analyse your findings. Homework: Conduct your other method of research. Due in next lesson Task get students to design another method of primary research, They will need to conduct their interview / send a letter or / or test their product (for Artefact students) ready to analyse in next weeks lesson Note: Artefact students will need to continue with their development record book (stresources – Welsh Bacc – Year 11 – Individual Project – Artefact Project – File “Development Record Book”)
