2 UP TAKE

3 TAKE UP YOUR MANTLE

4 The Weight of Ministry 1Ki 19:14  Then he said, "I have been very zealous for the LORD, the God of hosts; for the sons of Israel have forsaken Your covenant, torn down Your altars and killed Your prophets with the sword. And I alone am left; and they seek my life, to take it away.”

5 The Anointing 1Ki 19:16  and Jehu the son of Nimshi you shall anoint king over Israel; and Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abel-meholah you shall anoint as prophet in your place.

6 The Anointing 1Ki 19:16  and Jehu the son of Nimshi you shall anoint king over Israel; and Elisha the son of Shaphat of Abel-meholah you shall anoint as prophet in your place. Perspective: Ministry may feel lonely but we are not alone

7 The Mantle 1Ki 19:19-21  So he departed from there and found Elisha the son of Shaphat, while he was plowing with twelve pairs of oxen before him, and he with the twelfth. And Elijah passed over to him and threw his mantle on him.  20  He left the oxen and ran after Elijah and said, "Please let me kiss my father and my mother, then I will follow you." And he said to him, "Go back again, for what have I done to you?"

8 Hebrews 13:17  Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they keep watch over your souls as those who will give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with grief, for this would be unprofitable for you.

9 Hebrews 13:17  Obey your leaders and submit to them, for they keep watch over your souls as those who will give an account. Let them do this with joy and not with grief, for this would be unprofitable for you. Perspective: Ministry may be expressed, enabled, and affirmed through man, but the call and its associated accountability is to God.

10  21  So he returned from following him, and took the pair of oxen and sacrificed them and boiled their flesh with the implements of the oxen, and gave it to the people and they ate. Then he arose and followed Elijah and ministered to him.

11  21  So he returned from following him, and took the pair of oxen and sacrificed them and boiled their flesh with the implements of the oxen, and gave it to the people and they ate. Then he arose and followed Elijah and ministered to him. Perspective: Choosing ministry means celebrating what is gained not mourning what is lost.

12 The Final Journey

13 Gilgal: Separation 2Ki 2:1-14  And it came about when the LORD was about to take up Elijah by a whirlwind to heaven, that Elijah went with Elisha from Gilgal.  2  Elijah said to Elisha, "Stay here please, for the LORD has sent me as far as Bethel." But Elisha said, "As the LORD lives and as you yourself live, I will not leave you." So they went down to Bethel.

14 Jos 5:9  Then the LORD said to Joshua, "Today I have rolled away the reproach of Egypt from you." So the name of that place is called Gilgal to this day.

15 Joh 14:12  "Truly, truly, I say to you, he who believes in Me, the works that I do, he will do also; and greater works than these he will do; because I go to the Father.

16 Bethel: House of God 3  Then the sons of the prophets who were at Bethel came out to Elisha and said to him, "Do you know that the LORD will take away your master from over you today?" And he said, "Yes, I know; be still."  4  Elijah said to him, "Elisha, please stay here, for the LORD has sent me to Jericho." But he said, "As the LORD lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you." So they came to Jericho.

17 "Most theologians devote their lives to answering questions most people are not asking.”— C.S. Lewis

18 Gen 28:16-19  Then Jacob awoke from his sleep and said, "Surely the LORD is in this place, and I did not know it. "He was afraid and said, "How awesome is this place! This is none other than the house of God, and this is the gate of heaven."  18  So Jacob rose early in the morning, and took the stone that he had put under his head and set it up as a pillar and poured oil on its top.  19  He called the name of that place Bethel; however, previously the name of the city had been Luz.

19 2Ki 2:23-25  Then he went up from there to Bethel; and as he was going up by the way, young lads came out from the city and mocked him and said to him, "Go up, you baldhead; go up, you baldhead!"  24  When he looked behind him and saw them, he cursed them in the name of the LORD. Then two female bears came out of the woods and tore up forty-two lads of their number.  25  He went from there to Mount Carmel, and from there he returned to Samaria.

20 Ministry can be a bear, and then it eats you!

21 Rev 3:1  "To the angel of the church in Sardis write: He who has the seven Spirits of God and the seven stars, says this: 'I know your deeds, that you have a name that you are alive, but you are dead.

22 Jericho: A place called pleasant
5  The sons of the prophets who were at Jericho approached Elisha and said to him, "Do you know that the LORD will take away your master from over you today?" And he answered, "Yes, I know; be still."  6  Then Elijah said to him, "Please stay here, for the LORD has sent me to the Jordan." And he said, "As the LORD lives, and as you yourself live, I will not leave you." So the two of them went on.

23 2Ki 2:15-22  Now when the sons of the prophets who were at Jericho opposite him saw him, they said, "The spirit of Elijah rests on Elisha." And they came to meet him and bowed themselves to the ground before him.  16  They said to him, "Behold now, there are with your servants fifty strong men, please let them go and search for your master; perhaps the Spirit of the LORD has taken him up and cast him on some mountain or into some valley." And he said, "You shall not send."

24 17 But when they urged him until he was ashamed, he said, "Send
17  But when they urged him until he was ashamed, he said, "Send." They sent therefore fifty men; and they searched three days but did not find him.  18  They returned to him while he was staying at Jericho; and he said to them, "Did I not say to you, 'Do not go'?"  19  Then the men of the city said to Elisha, "Behold now, the situation of this city is pleasant, as my lord sees; but the water is bad and the land is unfruitful."

25 20 He said, "Bring me a new jar, and put salt in it
20  He said, "Bring me a new jar, and put salt in it." So they brought it to him.  21  He went out to the spring of water and threw salt in it and said, "Thus says the LORD, 'I have purified these waters; there shall not be from there death or unfruitfulness any longer.'"  22  So the waters have been purified to this day, according to the word of Elisha which he spoke.

26 20 He said, "Bring me a new jar, and put salt in it
20  He said, "Bring me a new jar, and put salt in it." So they brought it to him.  21  He went out to the spring of water and threw salt in it and said, "Thus says the LORD, 'I have purified these waters; there shall not be from there death or unfruitfulness any longer.'"  22  So the waters have been purified to this day, according to the word of Elisha which he spoke. Much of ministry is just making sure that there is consistency between what you are named and for what you are known. Perspective:

27 Jordan  7  Now fifty men of the sons of the prophets went and stood opposite them at a distance, while the two of them stood by the Jordan.  8  Elijah took his mantle and folded it together and struck the waters, and they were divided here and there, so that the two of them crossed over on dry ground.

28 The prophets could watch but they would not see

29 The prophets could watch but they would not see
Perspective: There will always be more who are waiting, watching and wanting than those who are willing to do the work. Who will you be?

30 9  When they had crossed over, Elijah said to Elisha, "Ask what I shall do for you before I am taken from you." And Elisha said, "Please, let a double portion of your spirit be upon me."  10  He said, "You have asked a hard thing. Nevertheless, if you see me when I am taken from you, it shall be so for you; but if not, it shall not be so."

31 9  When they had crossed over, Elijah said to Elisha, "Ask what I shall do for you before I am taken from you." And Elisha said, "Please, let a double portion of your spirit be upon me."  10  He said, "You have asked a hard thing. Nevertheless, if you see me when I am taken from you, it shall be so for you; but if not, it shall not be so."   Perspective: There greatest blessing in ministry is more: More opportunities, more laborers, more harvest, more glory for God.

32 11  As they were going along and talking, behold, there appeared a chariot of fire and horses of fire which separated the two of them. And Elijah went up by a whirlwind to heaven.  12  Elisha saw it and cried out, "My father, my father, the chariots of Israel and its horsemen!" And he saw Elijah no more. Then he took hold of his own clothes and tore them in two pieces.

33 13  He also took up the mantle of Elijah that fell from him and returned and stood by the bank of the Jordan.  14  He took the mantle of Elijah that fell from him and struck the waters and said, "Where is the LORD, the God of Elijah?" And when he also had struck the waters, they were divided here and there; and Elisha crossed over.

34 13  He also took up the mantle of Elijah that fell from him and returned and stood by the bank of the Jordan.  14  He took the mantle of Elijah that fell from him and struck the waters and said, "Where is the LORD, the God of Elijah?" And when he also had struck the waters, they were divided here and there; and Elisha crossed over. Perspective: Ministry has its finest hour not when the mantle is taken up but when God shows up.

35 1Pe 4:10  As each one has received a special gift, employ it in serving one another as good stewards of the manifold grace of God.

36 1Pe 4:10  As each one has received a special gift, employ it in serving one another as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. Perspective: “What God has gifted you to do, He has called you to do. What He has called you to do, He has gifted you to do.”

37 Ecc 9:10  Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might; for there is no activity or planning or knowledge or wisdom in Sheol where you are going.

38 Ecc 9:10  Whatever your hand finds to do, do it with all your might; for there is no activity or planning or knowledge or wisdom in Sheol where you are going. Joh 9:4  "We must work the works of Him who sent Me as long as it is day; night is coming when no one can work.
