1 A Wonderful Grammar Lesson
The Compound Subject A Wonderful Grammar Lesson

2 It consists of two (2) or more Subjects that are joined by a conjunction and that have the same verb.

3 The Compound Subject - Examples
Alfredo and she like hiking. Her brother, her uncle, and her cousin are teachers. Both the scout and the counselor were helpful guides. Subjects joined by and generally take a plural verb.

4 Hold on! Subjects joined by AND that name only ONE person, place, thing, or idea take singular verbs.

5 Examples The club’s secretary and treasurer was Adriana.
Country and western has become our favorite kind of music. The bed and breakfast down the street is always reserved weeks in advance.

6 *Singular Subjects joined by OR or NOR take a singular verb.
*Plural Subjects joined by OR or NOR take a plural verb.

7 Examples Laura or Isa knows the address.
Neither or phone nor our doorbell was working. Do the Wilsons or the Campbells live there? Neither cardinals nor finches come to the birdfeeder.

8 When a Singular Subject and a Plural Subject are joined by OR or NOR, the verb agrees with the subject nearer the VERB.

9 And… more examples :) Either Miguel or his friends are planning a football game. Neither the potatoes nor the roast is done. Either Juan or his parents are joining us for dinner.
