1 Ch. 22 From Neutrality to War

2 Europeans Go To War June 28, 1914, Bosnian terrorist assassinated Archduke Franz Ferdinand and his wife was the spark that started WWI. Bosnians who were recently taken over by Austria – Hungary wanted to be closer to Serbia and other Slavic ethnic groups. Austria – Hungary declared war on Serbia. Russia will side with Serbia and declare war on Austria – Hungary. Germany will declare war on Russia and its ally France. Britain will defend France and declare war on Germany.

3 Causes of the Outbreak Alliance system that linked the European nations to each other. Central Powers – Germany, Austria-Hungary, and the Ottoman Empire. Allied Powers – led by France, Britain, and Russia. Nationalism – strong feeling of pride in and loyalty to a nation or ethnic group. Puts National Interests first, regardless of the consequences for other countries. Militarism – policy of glorifying military power and values Leads to arms races. Imperialism – struggle for raw materials and markets for products.

4 U.S. Stays Neutral The U.S. will stay neutral which allowed the U.S. to offer loans and sell weapons and supplies to both sides. This would help American bankers, farmers, and businesses recover from a economic slowdown. Immigration – 1/3 of the population were immigrants or parents were immigrants

5 Tensions Rising Britain established a blockade of German ports.
British ships turned back vessels trying to enter German Ports, even from a neutral nation. Trade with Britain gave a boost to the American economy and U.S. banks and businesses were earning millions of dollars from loans and exports to the Allies. Germany built the U-Boats (submarines) to challenge the British blockade. Germany declared the waters around Britain a war zone. Unrestricted Submarine Warfare Sinking of the Lusitania The Lusitania was a passenger ship that was carrying weapons and ammunition. Germany would sink the Sussex. Sussex Pledge – Germany promised to spare all lives in any future U-boat attacks on merchant ships but the U.S. must force Britain to end its illegal blockade.

7 U.S. Declares War Wilson will try to get the warring powers to accept a “peace without victory.” Germany’s response was to launch an all-out effort to win the war, including a return to unrestricted submarine warfare. Zimmermann Telegram Arthur Zimmermann German Foreign Minister will send a note to the German minister in Mexico. Britain will intercept the transmission. Zimmerman will suggest that if the U.S. enters the war, Mexico and Germany should become allies. Germany will help Mexico regain its lost territory. April 4, 1917 the U.S. will declare war on Germany.
