1 Recommendations for Schools of Choice 2017-2018 School Year
Kris Griffor Assistant Superintendent, Elementary Instruction Mark Dziatczak Deputy Superintendent, Teaching and Learning Frequently, presenters must deliver material of a technical nature to an audience unfamiliar with the topic or vocabulary. The material may be complex or heavy with detail. To present technical material effectively, use the following guidelines from Dale Carnegie Training®. Consider the amount of time available and prepare to organize your material. Narrow your topic. Divide your presentation into clear segments. Follow a logical progression. Maintain your focus throughout. Close the presentation with a summary, repetition of the key steps, or a logical conclusion. Keep your audience in mind at all times. For example, be sure data is clear and information is relevant. Keep the level of detail and vocabulary appropriate for the audience. Use visuals to support key points or steps. Keep alert to the needs of your listeners, and you will have a more receptive audience.

8 Projected Schools of Choice Sibling Preference Placement for Kindergarten, 1st Grade and Baker MS Students A survey was ed to current Schools of Choice families requesting information on siblings who would be eligible for Kindergarten, 1st Grade and 6th, 7th and 8th Grade students for the School Year. Number of Kindergarten students that plan to attend: 51 Number of 1st Grade students that plan to attend: 4 Number of Baker Middle School students that plan to attend: 15 – 6th Grade 7 – 7th Grade 4 – 8th Grade

9 Enrollment projections, patterns and trends
The following factors were considered in making the recommendations for the Schools of Choice Program for school year: Current enrollment Enrollment projections, patterns and trends Numbers and percentages of Schools of Choice students currently in the district Projected number of Schools of Choice siblings who would be age-eligible to enter the district in if the decision is made to admit a “Limited” number of kindergarten, first and sixth through eighth grade students (Baker Middle School) under Schools of Choice Available elementary classrooms After analyzing the data and factors referenced above, we recommend that the district: Use Fred Ignatovich’s 1.5 enrollment projection numbers, with his recommended formula (most likely + low/2) as the foundation for determining the number of Schools of Choice (SOC) students to admit for the school year. Please note when reviewing “Document 1,” that our “actual” enrollment as of the February Count for both kindergarten and first grade students was above both Mr. Ignatovich’s “Most Likely” and “Low” enrollment projections. Accept SOC applications for 100 Kindergarten and 30 First Grade students. Based upon the number of applications to kindergarten received for the school year, we anticipate attracting more than 100 applicants. This would allow us to admit 100 kindergartners initially, with the option of admitting additional students, if space allows, in the third week of August. While this is quite close to the opening of school, we have found in the past that some families still welcome the opportunity to enroll their child in the Troy School District. Limit Schools of Choice kindergarten applicants to the full-day kindergarten program. Accept “Sibling Preference” applications only for siblings of current SOC students (to attend Baker Middle School only). Our current estimates for enrollment next year approximate to Accepting 15 applications during the initial application process will bring us extremely close to an ideal total student population at Baker, while allowing an option to admit more students in August if space permits. Accept SOC applications for only 55 Kindergarten and 5 First Grade students. Based upon the number of applications to kindergarten received for the school year, we anticipate attracting many more than 50 applicants. This would allow the District to admit 55 kindergartners initially, with the option of admitting additional students, if space allows, in the third week of August. While this is quite close to the opening of school, we have found in the past that some families still welcome the opportunity to enroll their child in the Troy School District. Limit SOC applications to kindergarten and first grade only. Baker Middle School has grown in enrollment to the point that it cannot accommodate additional students without adding additional, instructional FTE.  And, as the District continues to rebound with natural residential growth, all four middle schools will need the appropriate amount of space for residential students.
