NEED AND PURPOSE OF THE STUDY Due to information explosion and increasing demands of user community the engineering college libraries are forced to constantly expand their resources. It is necessary to design and develop need based procedures, information products and services in order to meet the information requirements of their stakeholders. The most important and effective means of achieving this task is the employment of library survey. NACLIN 2018, October 4-6, 2018, GITAM, Visakhapatnam

Library survey deals with the study of history and background of the library, library physical infrastructure, holdings, organization, products and services, ICT infrastructure and user requirements. The stakeholders of the library are the best judges to measure the performance of the library. The success of the library depends upon the satisfaction of its users regarding the available infrastructure and services offered by the library. Hence the present study namely “Status of Physical Facilities in Engineering College Libraries in Hyderabad and Ranga Reddy Districts, Telangana.” NACLIN 2018, October 4-6, 2018, GITAM, Visakhapatnam

SCOPE AND LIMITATIONS The study is primarily concerned with libraries of engineering colleges functioning within the territorial jurisdiction of the Hyderabad and Ranga Reddy districts in Telangana. There are about 186 engineering colleges in the study area and out of them 23 engineering colleges were established in the year 2000 or before. The present study is limited to 23 engineering colleges which were established in the year 2000 or before. The main criteria for fixing the scope of this study is that colleges which are of recent origin are not ideal for inclusion in the sample due to the fact that these colleges may not have well established physical as well as information communication technology infrastructure. DATA AND METHODOLOGY Survey method has been used for the study . A structured questionnaire was designed and used for collecting data. The data was collected from the librarians of 23 engineering colleges. Copies of questionnaire were personally distributed to the librarians and the response rate was 100 per cent. The data collected from the questionnaires was analyzed and interpreted. NACLIN 2018, October 4-6, 2018, GITAM, Visakhapatnam

FINDINGS Majority of the engineering colleges (69.57%) are affiliated to JNTU, Hyderabad. Majority of colleges (69.57%) fall under private non-minority category. Majority of the libraries (56.52%) are housed in some part of the college building. Most of the libraries (95.65%) have adequate standard furniture and equipment. A high percentage of libraries (47.83%) have more than 200 seating capacity. Majority of the libraries (73.91%) are not air-conditioned. Most of the libraries (86.96%) have adequate physical and ICT infrastructure facilities. Majority of the librarians (78.26%) are satisfied with the present physical facilities. SUGGESTIONS In order to strengthen the physical facilities to the stake holders of the engineering college libraries the following suggestions have been made. The number of seats to be enhanced in reading rooms and that drinking water facility and toilets should be providing in the library. The authorities concerned may take necessary measures to improve good ventilation and comfortable furniture. The management should make sufficient allocations in the budget for updating physical facilities as user friendly and welcoming as possible, ensuring a pleasant atmosphere within the physical compound that will encourage the users to return often and without hesitation. CONCLUSION In conclusion, one could argue that based on the findings of the study physical facilities could always influence the use of libraries in engineering colleges. Thus there is need for improvement of physical facilities in engineering libraries for effective use of the libraries to be achieved. Without adequate number of seats and bright lighting systems users would always find it difficult to achieve any meaningful academic work in the college libraries. Therefore physical facilities in the libraries are essential for comfortable reading and to sit in the library for longer hours to utilize the resources properly.
