Welcome to our Primary 5 Newsletter Session 2017-2018
The children have settled into Primary 5 with their new class Teachers, Miss McGinley and Mr Duffy. P5a have PE on a Monday & Wednesday and P5b on a Monday & Thursday. A full PE Kit and indoor shoes are required. PE kit can be left in school in a named bag. It is a school rule that all jewellery is removed before coming to school for PE lessons. Miss McGinley Mr Duffy In line with Curriculum for Excellence, the focus in the curriculum will be skills development. Our context for learning in Social Studies this session will be Scottish Wars of Independence, Caribbean Islands and Explorers. Our year planner, which gives an overview of our year programme, is attached. (Please note this is subject to change). A variety of research tasks will be distributed. This may be in the form of personal topics, projects or news stories. To help our lessons go smoothly we would like all pupils to bring to school, 2 sharp pencils, a ruler, a rubber and a sharpener and a set of coloured pencils. Learning at Home All children in P5 are issued with a homework diary to ensure information about home learning and notable dates etc are clear. Home Learning will be set for maths, spelling, reading and research. In addition they are expected to be reading novels of their own choice. Unfinished class work may be sent home for completion as homework. Each week the pattern of homework will be as follows:- SPELLING - words will be issued on Monday. Each word should be written out 3 times at home. A variety of spelling activities will be given. Revision on Thursday for a spelling test on Friday. The children should use the LOOK, SAY, COVER, WRITE and CHECK system. READING will be set from a given school text and should be prepared for oral work and discussions. In addition children are expected to be reading novels from the ‘Accelerated Reading’ programme. MATHEMATICS tasks will also be issued on a Monday. Pupils are encouraged to make suggestions to Mrs Bell, the staff and the Parent Council. Two representatives from each class are elected to the Pupil Council and they attend meetings each month. This allows pupils to air their views and put forward suggestions to have a part in the running of their school. If any of our parents and carers have a special interest or knowledge in any aspect of our school work then please let our teachers know. We would be pleased to hear from you. Finally, if you are concerned about any aspect of your child’s work in P5 please contact us through the school office to arrange an appointment. Miss McGinley and Mr Duffy
