Contributions Massieu attended the Beordeaux School for the Deaf
Owned by Abbe Sicard Learned to read and write French Sicard gave Massieu a teaching position at The National Institute for the Deaf in Paris Massieu decided to teach Sicard sign

One of the students he taught was Laurent Clerc Later founded a Deaf school in Lille, France Massieu is considered one of the pioneers in Deaf education Helped develop the first formalized French Sign Language
