Early immigrants settled on the coast then pushed inland They cleared trees to build homes and farms Many took new animals abroad i.e. the Merino sheep to Australia

7 Building on the coast then moving inland

8 Those who went to Australia to find gold doubled their population in 10 years
They created industry – coal mining, steel, textiles Brought skills – road building, farming, engineering etc
