Pressure, flow, volume, and electrical activity of the diaphragm (EAdi) waveforms from a patient on pressure support ventilation, and the presumed pressure curve (grey) if the patient was on neurally adjusted ventilatory assist (NAVA), with a preset NAVA level not shown. Breaths 1 and 3 demonstrate inspiratory timing asynchrony: there is a delay between the neural inspiration and the mechanical inflation. In breath 1 there may also be assist asynchrony. The amplitude of the neural breathing effort is greater than that of the mechanical inflation. Breath 2 demonstrates ineffective triggering: despite the presence of a neural breath effort, there is no mechanical inflation. Ineffective triggering asynchrony can be considered an extreme form of timing asynchrony. Walter Verbrugghe, and Philippe G Jorens Respir Care 2011;56: (c) 2012 by Daedalus Enterprises, Inc.
