Figure 2 Effect of erythrocyte membranes on murine smooth muscle cell calcification ex vivo. Murine aortic rings were incubated in Dulbecco’s modified eagle medium (DMEM), osteogenic medium (OM), with or without red blood cell (RBC) membranes (0.5%, 1.0%, or 2.0% of total RBC membrane protein) for 7 days. Aortic rings were embedded in paraffin and 5 μm-thick cross sections stained with Alizarin red (red signal). Mouse bone was used as positive control.
