1 Prokaryotes Vs. Eukaryotes Review

2 Cells The cell is the smallest unit of life (Building Blocks of Life)
Cells are either Prokaryotic or Eukaryotic Robert Hooke identified the first cell under his microscope. Used Cork Cells Called them cells because it reminded him of prison cells

3 Cell Theory All living things are composed of cells
The cell is the basic unit of life Cells arise from pre-existing cells

4 Prokaryotic Cells Prokaryote cells are bacterial cells
They do not have membrane- bound organelles Small and single cellular (unicellular) Basic structure with everything free floating inside They do have a cell wall and cell membrane They have DNA They have ribosomes

5 Eukaryotic Cells Plant cells, Animal cells, and Fungal cells are eukaryotes They have membrane-bound organelles Much larger than prokaryotes More complex and organized internal structure

6 Plant vs. Animal Cells Plant and Animal cells have all the same organelles except… Plant cells have a Chloroplast. Plant cells have a Large Central Vacuole Plant cells have a Cell Wall, Animal cells do not.

8 How a Cell is Built Cells have tiny organelles on the inside that work together to keep the cell running smoothly. Organelle literally means “tiny organs” All organelles are swimming in a liquid called the cytoplasm, and help the organelles communicate.

9 Plant vs. Animal Cell Activity (Part 1)
First we are going to explore the various organelles and their function. You must create a flow chart using each of the organelles listed on the handout Ex: Mitochondria Mitochondria Structures within cells that convert the energy from food into a form that cells can use. They are the power plants of the cell Located in both Animal and Plant Cells Ribosomes: Simple cell organelle that helps manufacture proteins. They are made of RNA and protein. They are non membrane-bound organelles. both Mitochondria: Membrane-bound organelle that converts fuel into energy that is available to the rest of the cell Chloroplasts: Double membrane-bound organelle that captures light energy and converts it to chemical energy through photosynthesis plant Nucleus: The central membrane-bound organelle that manages cellular functions and contains DNA. The brain or control center of the cell. It stores information used to make proteins for cell growth, function, and reproduction. Cell Wall: The rigid barrier that surrounds the outside of the plasma membrane, is made of cellulose, and provides support and protection to the cell Cell Membrane: A flexible boundary that controls the movement of substances into and out of the cell Vacuole: Membrane-bound vesicle for temporary storage of materials, such as food, enzymes, and wastes. both; plants have one large and animal cells have a few small

10 Plant vs. Animal Cell Activity (Part 2)
On the other side of the handout, you need to draw and label the location of the various organelles in their appropriate cell You need to use color and be as detailed as possible Due at the end of the period
