2 Figure 1 Ultraviolet (UV)A concentration-dependent inhibition of PMA/ionomycin-stimulated perforin-granule release from CD8hi+ cytotoxic T lymphocytes (CTL). Peripheral blood mononuclear cells were radiated with various doses of full spectrum UVA prior to PMA/ionomycin stimulation. The perforin-positive portion of CD8hi+ CTL was determined and set in relation to the unirradiated control at time zero. 10 J per cm2 UVA (n=6; C) was more effective than 5 J per cm2 (n=6; B) in delaying the PMA/ionomycin-stimulated perforin release, whereas 3 J per cm2 (n=6; A) and 30, 70, 100, or 150 UVB mJ per cm2 (n=6; D) did not influence this process. Statistical significance was calculated in relation to PMA/ionomycin-stimulated unirradiated cells (*p<0.05, **p< 0.01, ***p<0.001). Unirradiated, unstimulated control, ; PMA/ionomycin-stimulatory treatment, ; UV-radiated samples, dotted lines.
