What is a Personal Narrative?
A story about: a personal memory experience Situation event that occurred in a specific place at a specific time.

A Personal Narrative is a Memory
It’s not about any old memory. It’s about a time so important that you don’t ever want to forget. An elephant never forgets!

What would make a good memory to write about?
Bad Choice Getting out of bed Eating dinner Brushing your hair. Good Choice A picking out your dog A car wreck A victory Getting lost An injury Brainstorm: Other ideas? Good or Bad?

a true story. a story that really happened. a story that happened to the writer. a story that was observed by the writer.

a memory of one incident.

a story that shows strong feelings.

A Personal Narrative is...
a story that makes the reader feel the same as the writer felt at the time. Brainstorm: How can an author convey emotion? What words or language could the author use?

a story that makes the audience think. a story that provides food for thought or has a message. a story that tells what the reader what the narrator has learned from his or her experience, situation, or event. a story that has a moral or lesson.

Elements of a Personal Narrative
Uses some story elements: Setting Plot (chronological order: in the order that events happened) event 1, event 2, event 3 Characters Dialogue: “I’m nervous Mr. Pflieger will beat me in the Rainbow Olympics,” said Mr. Reider.

Elements of a Personal Narrative
Has a main idea that makes a point or conveys a message: what are you trying to tell your reader? Includes an introduction with a hook sentence. Gives background information to the reader. Has an ending that tells what the narrator has learned.
