Endometrial leukocyte cell populations in women receiving exogenous hormones. Estrogen was administered either by transdermal patch (gray bars) or orally (black bars). Positively staining cells were counted in ten random microscope fields at ×400 magnification. The average number of cells in a ×400 field (number above the bars) with the standard error is shown. As indicated, the samples were stained with anti-CD45 antibody; anti-CD56 antibody; anti-CD14 antibody; or anti-CD3 antibody.

Expression of IL-8 in cultured endometrial cells. An RT-PCR reaction used IL-8 primers (top) and β-actin primers (bottom) from isolated stromal and glandular cells of the same sample. The lane marked M contains the marker, φx174 digested with Hae III. Lanes 1–6 are stromal cells, and lanes 7–12 are glands. Lanes 1 and 7 represent 24 hours of culture with no estrogen; lanes 2 and 8 are 24 hours with 200 pg/mL of estrogen; lanes 3 and 9 are 48 hours with no estrogen; lanes 4 and 10 are 48 hours with 200 pg/mL of estrogen; lanes 5 and 11 are 72 hours with no estrogen; and lanes 6 and 12 are 72 hours with 200 pg/mL of estrogen. Relative values of chemokine expression were obtained by dividing the densitometry reading of the IL-8 lane over the β-actin lane.
