Medtronic Advances Ablation Technology with Multiphysics Simulation
The goal is to better characterize and optimize microwave tumor-ablation probes, for maximum predictability, effectiveness, and safety. The engineers optimized the emitting and receiving configuration of the probe, evaluated probe performance under different conditions, fully characterized heat transfer through tissue, and investigated liquid-to-gas phase-change dynamics. COMSOL results show the change in heat capacity in the tissue surrounding the probe, dominated by phase change of water in that tissue. A COMSOL weighted error plot. Blue areas indicate regions where reflected power is low for delivered ablation energy and where the receiver quality is good.
