1 Matter in Motion - all thing are made of tiny particles (atoms)
- particles are in constant and random motion in all directions and different speeds Due to the movement of particles ALL matter has kinetic E Kinetic Energy (KE) E due to movement the objects mass and velocity determines the KE of any matter

2 TEMPERATURE Is the measure of the AVERAGE Kinetic Energy of the particles that make up that object

3 Thermal Energy is the energy that comes from heat
heat is generated by the movement of tiny particles within an object. The faster these particles move, the more heat is generated Energy that comes from temperature of matter

4 Conduction Transfers thermal E with collisions between particles due to heat Occurs because particles are in constant motion Transfers E without transferring matter Occurs faster in solids and liquids (due to closeness) Metals are best conductors

5 Convection Occurs in fluids
More energetic particles move from one place to another Substance expands (becomes less dense) when temp rises Substance condenses (becomes more dense) when temp decreases

6 Convection cont. FLUID Is a substance that has no fixed shape and forms easily to external containment in a gas or a liquid. CONVECTION CURRENT Thermal heat moves from warmer parts of fluid to cooler parts

7 Radiation Transfer of E through electromagnetic waves such as light and microwaves Travel through space even if no matter is present When radiation strikes a material it absorbs, reflects, or transmits same E

8 Thermal Energy- DRAW THIS

9 Your assignment State an example of each conduction, convection, and radiation Explain why you chose that example and not something else
