Fig 1 Development of chronic inflammatory disease is a dynamic event. After initiation, the disease process involves acute inflammation that moves toward chronicity and tissue remodeling, as well as regeneration. These events are controlled by both intrinsic and extrinsic determinants. The grand challenges in this area are the development of prevention (primary, secondary, and tertiary), as well as the development of causal therapies.
