What is HOVRS? Home Visit Rating Scales – research based
Observational measure of home visiting quality Reliable: 85% inter-observer agreement Valid: predicts parent and child outcomes 7 scales rated from 1 (needs training) to 7 (excellent) HOVRS is based on best practice for home visiting Think about how you are trying to improve your practices as a home visitor with Marissa, you are the family’s coach and are there to support them in improving their parenting-child relationship

HOVRS measures how home visitors:
Respond to family strengths for supporting child development Build relationships focused on child development Facilitate parent behaviors that support development Collaborate with parents to plan home visit topics and activities Engage parents with children in home visit activities

Responsiveness to family strengths to support child development
Why? Uses family strengths to support development and individualize services How? Use what parents already do with what they already have

Build relationships focused on child development
Why? Promotes trust and engages family to support child’s development How? Listen actively, connect the family to resources, and consider child’s development in the family situation, as it is.

Facilitation of parent behaviors that support development
Why? Directly promotes developmental parenting How? Observe and describe what a parent already does to support the child’s development

Collaboration with parents to plan home visit topics, activities
Why? Builds parent capacity to support child development; shows respect for parents role How? Guide parents to make choices, reflect on what they enjoy doing with the child, and think about what they do often together
