What is it? Pellagra is a systemic disease caused by Vitamin B3 deficiency. Vitamin B3 is also known as Niacin. The deficiency is caused by a lack of nicotinic acid, nicotinamide and tryptophan in an individuals diet. People who are susceptible to this disease are individuals whose diet consist of mainly corn.

Clinical Features The 4 D’s: Pellagra causes: ●Dermatitis ●Diarrhea ●Dementia ●Death

Did you know that there are two types of Pellagra? Primary PellagraSecondary Pellagra ●Caused from inadquate intake of niacin (Vitamin B3) rich foods ●The body is unable to adequately absorb of niacin. This is caused by either: -Alcoholism -Diarrhea that has prolonged -Cirrhosis of the liver
