LCLS Control System Personnel Linac & BC2 Controls progress LTU, Dump Controls Undulator Control System Issues and concerns Summary
2
New responsibilities in Controls
Enzo Carrone, the new deputy in Controls Department, is responsible for LCLS control system Ernest Williams is now the manager of the software engineering & EPICS engineering in Controls
3
Controls Status since the last review
The Linac and BC2 Controls installation went very well The system was delivered in December 2007, within a week of the original schedule
4
Linac & BC2 Controls was ready in December as scheduled VS the schedule date of 12/3/2007
5
Summary of Controls Sub-Systems installed for Linac and BC2 Commissioning
Cable Plant Networking Magnet power supply Vacuum Controls LLRF Timing system Laser control upgrade OTR/YAG imaging BPM Wire Scanners Faraday Cup Cerenkov monitor Moveable collimator BC2 beamline control Bunch length monitor MPS BCS Configuration software MATLAB feedback system Bunch length measurement
6
Linac & BC2 Controls in use by physicists & Operations
7
A new Feedback framework has been commissioned and is in operation
Longitudinal Feedback worked successfully. Currently implemented as 3 different feedbacks DL1 Energy DL2 & BC2 Energies DL1, BC2 Energies + BC2 Bunch length Feedback framework allowed significant configurability during commissioning.
8
Upgraded the Controls for the injector laser

Remaining Controls installation benefits greatly from the injector, linac & BC2 experience
LTU Controls is similar in scope to Linac & BC2 We are past the engineering learning curve with very little development remaining Almost all procurement is complete including 100% of cable plant All IOCs and VME crates are on hand The order for over 95% of all required control modules (PLC, ADC, motion control, etc.) has been placed Some I&C rack delivery is being delayed, no impact on installation Racks are currently being loaded & tested in high bay area
12
Rack Assembly Area (B024 )
B913 & B921 PS racks B911 & B912 PS racks
13
INSTALLATION SCHEDULE
14
PPS cable plant installation is in progress
15
The readiness status of all systems including racks are reviewed weekly
16
Equipment Status / Rack Readiness – B921
17
Schedule – B913

Safety Systems BCS MPS PPS Mature design Project is on schedule
Concurrently developing new LCLS MPS Response time of less than one pulse at 120 Hz New hardware extended 1.2 km past current MPS Non-CAMAC Ready for photon section PPS The system design is based on the extension of the injector PLC-based architecture Need to now address the BSY area
19
Undulator Control System developed in collaboration with ANL
Undulator motion control system UCMI Design complete - contract awarded UMPI Design is complete All parts including VME hardware are on-site Assembly started May 12. Expect to take ~2 weeks Layout of rack is complete; 33 loaded Mini-racks will be shipped to SLAC mid June UCM Software testing and debugging complete. Version 1.0 released in April
20
Undulator Motion Control Software delivered by ANL and is being checked out
21
Undulator Control System is on schedule for field installation
Magnet power supplies: in very good shape Loaded racks are being tested in B024/B15 There is a detailed schedule covering bench testing, through field installation Software design is mature, requires little if any changes RF BPMs – production proceeding well Receivers will be shipped to SLAC June-July Timing, Vacuum, Networks are all on schedule WPM (6 Mini-racks), HLS: 1 Dbl rack in B913 & 4 CISCO enclosures will be interfaced to the control system
22
Conclusions The linac & BC2 control system is online & operational We are on schedule for the installation and completion of electron control system The major risk for the above items is schedule rather than technical complexity detailed plans are in place for the undulator control in collaboration with ANL
