Sn African population and trends Naturally low population density, may be vulnerable to local extinction e.g. where bfcs have not been seen for more than ten years.
Threats:
unintentional mortality through predator control measures (i.e. misidentified as a predator of livestock during night hunts; gin traps and cage traps often trap or kill bfcs, hunting dogs often kill bfcs, etc.);
removal of juveniles and adults from the wild to keep as pets;
road kills
land degradation, causing lower prey densities, loss of habitat
no legislative protection;
(intensive control of jackals may positively affect bfc survival)
